GFWC SHAMROCK STUDY CLUB

January Meeting Report

The GFWC Shamrock Club presented its annual Worthy Community Member Award at its Jan. 16 meeting, held at the Paola Fire Station. The 2012 recipient, Dorothy Chancellor, was honored for her volunteer work with numerous organizations in the Miami County area.

During the award presentation, Joyce Wassmer, club member, listed the many organizations for which Dorothy has, or is, volunteering including PACA, Operation Holiday, Salvation Army, Miami County Medical Auxiliary, Miami County Hospital volunteer, St. Mary’s Food Kitchen, Holy Trinity Altar Society Guild and Special Olympics. Dorothy then shared some personal experiences and explained how she became involved in volunteering through a USO in Chicago where she met her late husband, Richard.

“A Glimpse Inside the Emerald Isle” was the title of a travelogue given by club member Judy Miller and her daughter, Maria Heid. Following the business meeting, they presented a 25-minute slide show and commentary, including entertaining background stories, highlighting the four primary locations a bank-sponsored VIP tour group had visited during Sept. 6-17, 2011.  Two other Shamrock members—Helen Carter and Shirley Ferley—were among the participants. Miller also displayed and discussed a variety of souvenir items from the trip.

An installation ceremony was conducted and Beatriz Hursey was welcomed as the newest member of the club. She was presented with a shamrock plant, a club yearbook, and a copy of the GFWC Clubwoman magazine.

Committee reports were presented on this year’s Christmas Homes Tour and the Veterans Program for which 201 tickets had been sold. After all expenses, the club’s portion of the profits amounted to $315.25. Club members also assembled and delivered more than 100 red Christmas stockings filled with a variety of personal items, along with the club’s traditional gift of dozens of white tube socks to the Dwight D. Eisenhower V.A. Medical Center in Leavenworth, KS
.

Shelley Haines reported on the Clubwoman Magazine.  She reminded us that the Community Improvement Award could win some club some money... why not try to get that award for the Community Restroom we have been campaigning for at the Square.  Helen Carter said she would make that report.

Volunteer hours for the year were collected, and a report will be made to the GFWC to be compiled with those of the other districts in the State.

The clubwomen were reminded to keep collecting hats, scarves and gloves or mittens for the Mississippi Valley Region Conference.  Helen Carter is taking all of these, and holding them till we need them to decorate our tables at that Conference.

The next meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 6, at the home of Clubsoman Judy Jeck.
